In her notations series, Melanie Ender has interlaced copper wire into the grid of a natural fabric, like metallic threads on a loom that cross over and under, making sudden halts and careful angles. Sometimes, a curve will edge its way towards the border of the textile plane, only to go beyond it in a nimble curve. In these notations, a choreographic sensibility runs through assemblages where no element can be separated from another. Each material performs something beyond its contours or functionality, for they are not treated as a means to an end or a static element. In Melanie Ender’s work, matter is the site of activeness.
